Man with Dog
By Doug Lawler
I use dogs in my work as an easily accessible means of expressing emotions, relationships or anything that we may be unable to express for ourselves. This painting is a portrait of unity
; man, dog and nature. I wanted to approach it as a landscape; a kind of human landscape in unity with his constant companion.
This oil pastel on paper painting was created with no brushes or tools – just the oil pastels and my fingers. By rubbing and smearing the colors on to the paper, I was able to coax the figures and depth of the landscape from the oil pastels.
